Public Speaking: Please Be Warned

public speaking warning

One Sunday morning, you wake up and say to yourself," Yes! I want to learn how to speak in public."

Wow! Congratulations! That is great! Wonderful! Awesome! Then you start imagining yourself delivering an inspiring speech on stage at a famous convention centre. You are imagining yourself speaking confidently, wearing a nice grey corporate suit, giving your best smile to a large audience. You are imagining the audience cheering for you and giving you a big round of applause and....

Now wait a minute! Stop right there! Hold that thought! Before you go any further, I think i should warn you. There are a few things you have to know before you get all excited.

Public speaking warning 1# Public Speaking will scare you to death

Well, i don't think public speaking can kill you. At least not literally. Nevertheless you will start sweating. Your hands and body trembling. Your heart will beat faster. You will have difficulties to breath and the worst case scenario...you can't even say a word!

Helpful Tips:

Oh don't worry. It’s perfectly normal to get nervous while giving a speech. Everybody gets nervous including the experienced speakers. It is just that these speakers know how to hide their nervousness from the audience. Only they know how they really feel inside!

Relax. It usually happens at the beginning of your speech. After you start delivering your speech within a few minutes, you will be fine. You only need to practice more. The more speeches you deliver, the easier it is to overcome your anxiety.

Public speaking warning 2# You will make many mistakes

Yes. A lot of mistakes. You will forget what you want to say. You might speak too fast. You might speak too slow. The content of your speech may not be interesting enough to your audience. Your low monotone voice might put people to sleep. Nobody laugh at your jokes. Yes. You will make many obvious mistakes.

Helpful Tips:

Remember that nobody is perfect.
"Every master was once a disaster"(T. Harv Eker) Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Do not be ashamed when you make mistakes. Nobody gets it right the first time. It is a part of learning. Make mistakes and learn from the mistakes. You will then know how to avoid the mistakes. You will eventually become a better speaker.

Always trust yourself. Take in good advice and be around positive people who support you.

Public speaking warning 3# It will be hard work

I should warn you. Are you ready to work hard? Because the best way to learn public speaking is by practising. Practice, Practice and Practice. You will need to spend some time to learn your speech by heart. There will be some sleepless night. You will spend hours even days perfecting the content of your speech. You will get headache while writing your speech. Most probably you will end up delivering your speech in your sleep.

Helpful Tips:

Do not be afraid to work hard to improve yourself. Public speaking is a skill. You will not be able to master any skill by doing nothing. Miracles do not happen that way. The way to do it is by doing it. Be committed, take the initiative and believe in yourself. It’s all worth it.

Alright. That's it. Now it is all up to you. If you are ready to face your fear, staying positive and willing to give your very best...so go for it! Give yourself a pat at the back for your effort. Be proud of yourself. Nothing is impossible once you put your heart and soul into it. Stop imagining and start speaking!
