WHY EVERY SPEAKER SHOULD LEARN TO SPEAK OTHER LANGUAGES?
Tell me
How many languages do you speak?
Are you bilingual? Or are you multilingual?
Do you have friends from other countries around the globe?
Do you often travel abroad?
Say, have you ever been to Malaysia?
I’m from the Land of Borneo, Malaysia.
As
Malaysians, we have many different races, cultures and languages. Most of us
here speak more than one language.
Like
any other countries in the world, languages connect us with one another.
Yes.
Public speaking connects us with one another too. But no matter how powerful
public speaking can be to influence, motivate and inspire, languages are the
important keys. Without the keys, we can’t open the door.
And
the connection between languages and public speaking is stronger than you can
ever imagine.
If
a speaker can’t speak the language, the communication between the speaker and
the audience will not take place. And speakers who can speak the language shall
diminish the barrier between them.
Believe
it or not, there are many advantages for speakers who can speak other
languages. Below, I have listed 3 points on how being multilingual can benefit
your speaking career in so many ways.
1)Gain The Competitive Advantage For Your Speaking Career
As
we all know, there are many public speakers around the world. Some of them are
successful and well-known for their field of expertise. Meanwhile some are
still struggling and slowly working their way up. In other words, these
speakers need to have some unique quality in order to stand out among the rest.
Being able to speak in other languages can be one way to do it.
Do
you realise that, you can actually boost up your speaking career if you can
speak other languages? You will have the competitive advantage that you seek.
You can expand your speaking career in other countries. You can explore endless
speaking opportunities anywhere you choose. A speaker who can speak many
languages will surely be in demand.
2) Help to communicate with Audience from other countries
Reaching
out to your audience is not always an easy task. You must be able to
communicate with your audience in order to connect effectively. As a speaker,
we meet different audience every time. Sometimes, we come across audience from
foreign countries who might not know how to speak in English.
This
is when being multilingual will come in handy. Imagine you are trying to
explain important points to the audience who cannot even understand a single
word you say. It can be very challenging. If you know how to speak their
language, it will easier for you to communicate with your audience. You shall
have no problem in conveying your message to anyone.
3) Build up Good Image And Reputation For Speaker
When
you can speak other languages fluently, it will not only help you in delivering
your speech and get the job done. Other positive things will happen to you as
well.
I
have always been fascinated by people who can speak very well in various
languages. It gives a good impression of a person who is knowledgeable, smart,
adaptable and versatile. It shows someone who has an open mind and has many
life experiences.
Speakers
who can speak other languages represent an image of a great communicator. This can
eventually build a world-class reputation for the speaker. You will be able to
reach audiences around the world.
It doesn’t stop there. If you must know, there are many other reasons why you should consider learning other languages…
Some
research shows that learning other languages is good for the brain. We will
have better memories, better listening skills and enhance our creativity.
Apart
from that, by knowing how to speak well in other languages, we can make new
friends easily. And by having friends from different countries, we will learn
and understand other cultures besides our own. This will certainly open up our
minds to other perspective of life and makes us wiser and more experienced than
we were before. All the positive elements combined into one.
As
a speaker, the satisfaction of this profession comes from the ability to make a
difference. We spread knowledge and skills which can benefit others. We share
valuable ideas which can help others. We give love, motivation and
encouragement.
If we can make a
difference in one place, why not do it anywhere else in the world?
So

Good
luck. Selamat Berjaya. Bueno Suerte. Bonne chance.
